Hillside Tennis Club a Brief History

Incorporated on June 8, 1925, Hillside Tennis Club was the collective idea of a group of tennis enthusiasts backed by Sir Herbert Holt, President of the Royal Bank of Canada, who donated the land of its current site which, at the time, was situated in a rural setting on the outskirts of Montreal’s downtown.

The initial Club consisted of three grass tennis courts and a small clubhouse for social gatherings. In the winter, the presence of a popular ski jump on the hill adjacent to the Club, is the likely origin of the Club’s name. Skiers ended their jumps on the tennis courts laden with numerous bales of straw to prevent injury and to block skiers from ending up in the Club dining room!

Over time, the Club increased the number of courts to six, installed a swimming pool, established fine dining and now regularly hosts popular social events. Hillside has an honoured tradition of whites-only tennis clothing and remains one of the last Montreal tennis clubs to do so. Real estate re-development in the local area has been a continuous threat that the Club has successfully resisted due to the resilient leadership of the Board to Directors and a spirit of community among members.

On April 24, 1977, a fire engulfed and destroyed the original clubhouse resulting in the loss of most of its memorabilia and written history. Thanks to the financial support of Mr. Lorne Webster and the determination of the Board of Directors, the clubhouse was rebuilt and re-opened in the spring of 1978.

Completed in May 2022 prior to its 100th anniversary, a major and multi-phased revitalization and modernization of the Club’s facilities was carried out through the generous financial contributions by members and time and expertise provided by a dedicated committee. This enhancement project addressed evolving member needs and prepared the Club for the future. Today, as Hillside Tennis Club is preparing to celebrate its Centennial Anniversary in 2025, the Club thrives as a unique and cherished oasis in the heart of Montreal with an increasingly diverse and ever dedicated membership.
